Back after a little break with a studio update! I just stretched this piece, which sold recently and will be picked up for delivery soon. It's always interesting to see how a painting behaves after being rolled for a long time — and once again, proven: in a good way. This one was painted in 2021 and stayed rolled for about four years, safely wrapped around a strong tube and protected with silk paper. Freshly stretched now, in perfect condition, almost like new. At what point does a painting start to speak to you? Stages of a painting. Swipe to see chaos and beauty grow.  I thought about minimalism at the beginning. But that's not always what the work wants. Sometimes it starts calling for more – for color, movement, layers. These are four different stages, the last slide is a little video of the current status. It is a great example of what happens at a specific point: The piece begins to convey something. It could be totally abstract, like a strange feeling or a sense of attraction, or it might evoke memories of something tangible through its colors and shapes. Looking up is currently rewarding in Frankfurt! A few days ago I visted Janet Echelman’s net sculpture, "A Sky Full of Hope – Earthtime 1.78 Frankfurt," hovering over the Konstablerwache. The title honors our city's diversity, representing people from 178 (!!!) nations living here, and the woven net symbolizes how connection creates stability. The "Konsti" is a place of contrasts: While somewhat scruffy and unkempt, it is also a lively meeting place; for instance, the popular regional farmers' market offers local specialties and is a spot to enjoy an after-work beer or wine with colleagues, making it a genuine hub for locals and visitors alike. For me as an artist, it raises an exciting question: Can this airy, wind-responsive sculpture help transform and elevate such a complex urban space? Gesture as Language. I almost always listen to music while painting. Although I have known the song for years, I recently watched the video for Kate Bush’s “Wuthering Heights” for the first time and was completely captivated: her expressive, almost mime-like dance conveyed so much emotion, telling her interpretation of the novel in a way that felt immediate and physically palpable. Studio update: Stretching canvases! I prefer preparing several frames at once—that way, whenever inspiration strikes for a new artwork, I can just pick the right surface and start. First I decided to stretch with linen, which has a different feel and behavior compared to standard cotton canvas. The first piece ready to go is 160 x 140 cm (~63 x 55 in). Building the stretcher bars and stretching the fabric is definitely hard work, but this physical routine is actually where my creative process begins and the first ideas start flowing. Swipe to the last slide to see all the essential tools I use! A few practical tips: Canvas pliers: Essential if you’re working with heavy or pre-primed canvas to get the tension just right. Staple gun: An electric staple gun makes life much easier for batch preparation, but if you’re only stretching one or two canvases occasionally, a standard manual staple gun works completely fine. On Friday I shared these two pieces. I actually started them back in January, and even then, they felt a bit unusual for me: my idea was to use clear geometric shapes as a background. The first photo shows where I left them in January (and if you scroll to the last slide, you can see how they originally started). Since then I changed my practice and my palette while working on other works and the last weeks and months on the series “She Paints Outside the Lines” and “The Essence” (coming soon). So when I looked at these beginnings again, I honestly had no idea where to take them. So I sat down. Looked. Thought. Looked at my recent work. Looked again. In the end, I decided to bring in the gestural marks, hand-applied paint, and color palette from my newer series—slowly carving the shapes out of the background. But along the way, I chose to leave parts of those original layers visible, letting the history of the painting stay part of the final piece. Here are a few snapshots from that painting session. Everything comes back. My color palettes usually come in phases, and favorites always make a comeback. The mix I’m currently using is by no means new; for instance, I worked with an almost identical combination back in 2022 One of my absolute favorite paintings came out of that palette, and I’m taking this opportunity to show it again! Standing in the studio, completely lost. After six months I’m trying to return to this diptych — and realizing I’ve completely lost the thread. I just stumbled across this piece from 2025 — and the colour palette feels surprisingly familiar to what’s resurfacing in my work right now. Certain things run like a thread through my practice: colours often come in phases, moments where I keep circling around a palette, a combination, working my way through it. The same goes for my “reduced” approach to colour. Not in intensity, but in the number of hues I actually use. Even when a piece looks bold or bright at first glance, most colours sit within the same family, so some works could almost be called monochrome. Heatwave. 36 degrees outside, 29 in the studio. Time to continue working on this one - a new painting for the "She Paints Outside the Lines" series. This is the first one on canvas, and a large one - it measures 180x190 cm (~71 x 75 in). Currently I think I'll keep this direction, but as long as it isn't finished, everything is possible... As usually working parallel on some smaller ones on paper. I love the details. But miss contrast. Looking forward to what the day brings, but guess it will be more dark, earthy brown. The "Snapshots" series began when I noticed the beautiful edges of torn works on heavy handmade paper. Reworking those fragments led to delicate pieces, presented floating in deep object frames. "Stripes" was the first theme, "Urban jungle" the second. One after another, they fly out into the world! A brilliant framing idea from a collector that turns a large work on paper into a floating object! I’ve been showcasing some large-format paperworks lately, so I thought an example of how to frame them would be a good fit. These are pics from a collector: The artwork was placed between two sheets of acrylic glass, which were then mounted to the wall to appear as if floating freely. A great idea, don't you think? The work is "Summer Wine" from 2020, it measures 140x287 cm (~ 55x113 in). It found its forever home in the USA some time ago via @ideelart. Beyond that, you can of course choose a classic frame — either made to fit the exact dimensions or slightly larger, allowing the work to be placed on a colour‑coordinated background. I’ve been working obsessively these days. When I returned to paper a few weeks ago, something began to shift. The title “She paints outside the lines” appeared during the process — first as a description of what my hands were doing, but then as an echo of the current conversations around us about women, expectations, boundaries. The title became a symbol of courage — a reminder to anyone who encounters the work to find their own path, to step into it with confidence, and not to shrink themselves to fit someone else’s frame. And at the same time, it describes the work quite literally: painting over the line on purpose, letting the gesture lead instead of controlling it. The first pieces were loud and bright, full of glowing pinks. After three works, I felt a urge to shift the palette toward something more muted, grounded, complex. Less bright, more forceful. From that point on, the creative process took on an almost trance-like quality: raw, physical, unfiltered. I began working directly with my hands again; entirely without tools. Rough edges, wild traces, full of energy, following my impulses without restraint. Here are a few moments from the studio. Beginnings, almost‑endings, and everything in between. As kids, we’re taught to color nicely — stay inside the lines, follow the rules, don’t make a mess. And sure, some rules matter: kindness, responsibility, caring for one another. They’re the glue that holds us together. But somewhere along the way, you also need the courage to think bigger. Wilder. To chase the dreams that tug at you, to find your own voice, your own path - and walk it with confidence. This painting stands for exactly that: boldness, freedom, and the quiet power of choosing your own way. A visual reminder to step outside the lines. And honestly? The lower edge is irregular; the height is taken from the shorter right side. Depending on framing, the edge can remain uneven or be straightened. Small drill holes from the creation process are visible along the perimeter. I imagine it looking absolutely stunning in a frame with a little “breathing room” around the edges, allowing that irregular lower contour to really shine. Another striking option would be mounting it between two large acrylic glass panels for a bold, contemporary look. This is THE opportunity in 2026! There are open calls. Many of them are run professionally and with good intentions. But at the same time, submission fees have become increasingly common. Of course, charging a fee doesn’t automatically make an open call less serious. But when you look closer, a pattern emerges: there's money collected, while the entire entrepreneurial risk is shifted onto the artist — who already carries that risk anyway. And still, artists apply. Because we’re always looking for opportunities: to show our work, to enter new conversations, maybe to be represented by an additional gallery. Framing - usually not part of my job. But of course I think about framing possibilities for collectors or how I'd present a work in an exhibition. For this new series (not all are finished yet) I decided to use a larger matt, so that the nice edges of the handmade paper are viewable. I also tested different colors for the background and will go with anthracite - it's a nice contrast to the handmade paper and matches for all color combinations. For single works, pairs or smaller groups a dark olive or orange f.e. would look great too. I get to unpack new toys! My work is based on acrylic paint, but I love using plenty of other materials as well – whether it’s charcoal, pastels (oil or soft pastels), tempera sticks, pencils, spray paint … I just received a selection of new pencils, both water‑soluble and waterproof. I deliberately ordered different colors and brands to test which ones I like best. Hard to believe, but the differences are huge. When you bring just a bit of paper and paint and end up with unexpected magic. What do you think — and which one is your favorite? Last week I taught a painting class at the EigenArt Art Academy. Even though I wasn’t painting in the traditional sense, I brought a stack of handmade paper (about 15×15 cm / 5.9×5.9 in), some charcoal, and a few small tubes of paint. Perfect for playing around a bit while the participants were working. These are the results, pieces in various stages. Funny enough, many of them turned into abstractions of real things: flowers, fish, fruit (my favorite is the watermelon!). Right now I’m not sure where I’ll take these pieces next. The unpretentious (and much more common than most people think…) sides of an artist’s life! I usually store my large paintings rolled up, especially anything about 120 × 120 cm and larger. For the exhibition in Oberursel at @bilder_hofmann_oberursel I had to re‑stretch several of these large pieces. Re‑stretching a finished artwork is much more work than stretching a fresh canvas, and of course it has to be done with great precision (when I lifted it at an early stage, it was to check if the edges are exactly like before). Here’s one hour cropped to 2 minutes stretching: "Out Into The Green" | 160x160 cm | ~ 63 x 63 in | mixed media | raw canvas | It’s always fascinating to unroll a painting again — whether it’s for shipping or, like here, to re‑stretch it for an exhibition. The longest a piece of mine has ever stayed rolled up was six years, and it came out absolutely perfect. And if you’re wondering why I roll the painted side outwards: with acrylics, remember this simple rule — stretch, don’t compress. This is “Here’s to the Crazy Ones”, one of my absolute favorite paintings. I love how the colors blended on the canvas, creating those beautifully “dirty” ochre tones that now clash so boldly with the pinks. The bad camera of my mobile doesn't do it justice - I publish also a post with pics, that show colors and details better and more sharp! Contrasts are one of the most important elements in my work — and this one is a perfect example of why I adore them. This work was created on a white‑primed canvas, something I rarely do, but here it was the perfect choice. The partially transparent layers glow even more because of it. And of course, such a strong painting needs someone with an equally strong character to love it — a little loud, a little wild, ready for anything. Maybe that’s why it’s still with me today. I started this piece back in October 2025 — as a diptych, and originally in yellow. While the other half stayed yellow and was finished in November, this one went through quite a transformation and took until now to complete. Which makes me all the happier with it: I love the colors and shapes, the hazy outlines that hint at buildings, as if something is slowly emerging — or fading away. Spring is finally here! Outside — and in this artwork. Fresh greens, crisp whites, organic, plant‑like shapes, and those rising brushstrokes bring the season to life without actually “showing” it. "And I Still Dream" | 100 x 80 cm | ~ 39 x 31 in | mixed media | raw canvas | 2025. I chose this title because green symbolizes renewal — perfect for our spring theme — and perhaps for the very same reason, it has always been the color of hope. It was amusing to see the studio walls in the pics: this was one of the very first paintings I created after moving in in January 2025. When I try to describe my work, I often think of it as both opulent and minimalist at the same time — even though those are complete opposites. Yet that’s genuinely how they feel to me. Maybe it’s because of my reduced palette — some of you may have noticed that I often use just one or two colors or color families (not counting black and white) — on the one hand, and the bold, gestural application of paint and all the little details on the other. But if you forced me to explain it precisely, I honestly couldn’t. "Summer's Heart (Maximum Lush)" found its home - thanks to @saatchiart it will head to Phoenix, US. I usually ship large formats rolled up (Summer's Heart is 155x155 cm | 61x61 in) - it’s often cheaper to have them restretched locally than to send them ready to hang. But this piece was part of an interior project of an LA Interior Designer with a very tight deadline, so it needed to arrive fully framed and on short notice in Phoenix. The request was for a light natural wood frame. That meant: building a crate (more on that soon!) and, most importantly, find a frame in this huge format at lightning speed. Huge thanks to @bilder_hofmann_oberursel for crafting this beautiful light oak frame in record time!
